Parkinson SuperWalk 2011 Highlights

A Super SuperWalk Weekend Across Alberta

CalgaryAlberta Raises $308,362.86 for Support and Research
After years of great Parkinson SuperWalks, clients, caregivers, family, friends and staff across the province were looking forward to our next great event — and we got one! With a little help from Mother Nature, it was nothing but blue skies and sunshine on Super Weekend (September 10th and 11th) as over 1300 Walkers came out in support of those affected by Parkinson disease. Our footsteps were seen all over Alberta as participants from across the province gathered in our host Lethbridgecommunities to help Ease the Burden and Find a Cure. This year Calgary, Cochrane, Edmonton, Grande Prairie, Lethbridge, Medicine Hat and Red Deer were joined by Big Hill and High Level, making a grand total of NINE walks in Alberta this year!!

Walkers were entertained by various bands, performers, demonstrations and displays. Our thanks to Amanda Wiebe (Big Country 93.1), bORDERLINE, The Jerome Tocher Band, Knights of the Northern Realm, Matt Lavers (Country 95/B-93), Medicine Hat Live Music Club, Saucie, Natasha Gibson, Parking for Parkinson’s, Stampede Princess Gemmelle, the face painters, jugglers, Tai Chi demonstrators and those who brought the classic cars and hot rods!! A big thank you as well to Uplift Home Care, ATCO and the Parkinson Alberta Society Board Members and local dignitaries who attended our Walks!!

After warm-ups (thanks to Jill, Lexi, and Kirsten and crew from CRIS), the 16th annual SuperWalk got underway. Walkers did 1, 3 and 5 Grande Prairiekm distances depending on the community. Walkers Cochranecrossing the finish line were greeted by volunteers, friends, and family all helping to make a difference for people living with PD. A huge thank you to M&M Meats, Save-On Foods, Panago Pizza, Grande Prairie Elks Lodge, Calgary Lion’s Club, Weston Bakeries, Van Houtte, Big Chief Beef Jerky and Culligan Water for making sure all our Walkers and volunteers had a wonderful lunch after the Walk.

We are happy to announce that together Albertans raised over $308,000, contributing to the $2.79 million raised across Canada. At the most recent count the totals raised across the nine host communities were as follows:

High LevelBig Hill: $1,100 Red Deer
Calgary: $103,000
Cochrane: $19,000
Edmonton: $95,000
Grande Prairie: $23,000
High Level: $1,060
Lethbridge: $10,000
Medicine Hat: $17,000
Red Deer: $40,000

EdmontonCongratulations to Ali Grzela, Bill “Tippy Toes” Thompson, Bob Head, Grant Kozak, Laurine Fillo, Lena Van Pelt and Marg Abbott-Brown, who were the top Walkers in each of the seven host communities. Together they raised just shy of $36,000. Laurine Fillo was the
province’s top, top Walker raising almost $15,000!!!

On the Team front, Teams Ebelher Elves, Jazz Hands, JAB-erwalkers, Super Striders, Wally’sMedicine Hat Walkers, and Waisman were the top Teams from six host communities, raising over $43,000 collectively! Team Super Striders was the top fundraising Team in the province, raising $22,000.01!

Our Parkinson SuperWalk was a huge success because of the large amount of people that contributed. The event would never have been possible without all of our Walkers, volunteers and donors. We walked together and learned from each other, while showing support for the thousands of Albertans affected by Parkinson disease. Thanks again, Alberta, we look forward to seeing everyone stepping up and stepping out at the 2012 SuperWalk SuperWeekend!

The National Celebration. Making our mark, having an impact!
